“Through joy and sorrow, pain and pleasure, the soul comes to a knowledge of itself; then begins the task of learning. the laws of life, that the discords may be resolved, and the harmony be restored”.

Helena Blavatsky viewed compassion not as a mere virtue but as the "Law of Laws" and an eternal, universal essence, fundamental to the Theosophical path of spiritual development. She emphasized compassion as a voluntary act of unselfish love and sacrifice, a critical component for achieving universal sympathy, and a core tenet of Theosophy that mirrors ancient wisdom traditions like Zen and Mahayana Buddhism.
Compassion as Universal Law
Law of Laws: Blavatsky described compassion as the ultimate universal law, suggesting it is a "shoreless universal essence" that embodies harmony and truth.
Universal Sympathy: In her writings, such as "Compassion the Spirit of Truth," she integrates the concept with universal sympathy and sacrifice, presenting it as a foundational principle of the cosmos.
Compassion in Theosophical Ethics
Voluntary Sacrifice: She taught that true compassion involves unselfish love and voluntary sacrifice, a concept distinct from selfishness or enforced acts.
Ethical Framework: Compassion serves as a central pillar of the ethical and spiritual path outlined in Theosophy, emphasizing that the well-being of others is intrinsically linked to the progress of the soul.
Connection to Other Traditions
Buddhism and Zen: Blavatsky's emphasis on inner transformation, direct experience, and the necessity of compassion aligns with the ideals of esoteric Mahayana and Zen Buddhism, which she admired.
Ancient Wisdom: Theosophy's focus on compassion is presented as a revival of ancient wisdom, where this understanding was considered fundamental to spiritual realization.
